National Report Warns Direct Support Workforce Crisis Is Threatening Disability Services Nationwide

A new report from ANCOR finds that America's direct support workforce crisis continues to deepen, placing essential services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) at risk. Survey responses from 524 provider organizations across all 50 states revealed that 85% experienced moderate or severe staffing shortages, more than half were forced to turn away new referrals, and nearly one-third discontinued services due to workforce challenges. The report also warns that Medicaid funding uncertainties, payment disruptions, and workforce-related immigration policy changes could further reduce access to community-based supports, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Providers are urging federal and state policymakers to invest in sustainable Medicaid rates and workforce solutions to preserve critical disability services. Click here for the full report.
